KT and LG Electronics Partner to Lead Global 6G Standardization Efforts

Korea Telecom (KT) has partnered strategically with LG Electronics to advance research and development in 6G mobile communications technology. This collaboration aims to drive the standardization and enhancement of 6G technology, focusing on creating wideband full-duplex equipment, compatible transmission and reception devices, and performance verification tests for future 6G frequencies.

The joint effort will leverage the expertise of both South Korean technology leaders to develop and refine critical components for 6G networks. KT, under the leadership of CEO Kim Young-seop, and LG Electronics will work together to promote the advancement of 6G technology.

The companies will collaborate on designing and producing full-duplex communication transceiver devices, followed by comprehensive performance validation. Their efforts aim to influence global 6G standards, particularly by advancing and perfecting key technologies and services.

LG Electronics has been actively involved in 6G research since 2019 and anticipates that this collaboration with KT will further its efforts in leading standardization and uncovering innovative services. The partnership will leverage the expertise of both companies to drive advancements in 6G technology and support the development of new applications.

Standardization bodies like the ITU and 3GPP are working on 6G specifications, with 3GPP aiming to finalize the standards for base stations and terminals by 2029. KT and LG Electronics’ joint efforts will align with these initiatives, helping them to play a key role in shaping the future of 6G technology.

Jong-sik, Executive Director of KT Network Research Institute, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating, “Through this 6G research and development partnership with LG Electronics, KT aims to lead the advancement of 6G mobile communication technology and enhance global standardization leadership. We are committed to securing innovative network technology and capabilities to provide differentiated services.”

Je Young-ho, Executive Director at LG Electronics C&M Standard Research Institute, highlighted the company’s proactive approach to 6G research since 2019. He noted, “Through our collaboration with KT, we anticipate making substantial contributions to both leading 6G standardization and discovering essential services.”

In addition to the KT and LG Electronics collaboration, SK Telecom and Singtel recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance next-generation networks. This partnership will focus on AI and orchestration tools essential for progressing to 6G. The companies also plan to produce a white paper to guide others in leveraging 5G and preparing for 6G advancements.

Kang Jong-ryeol, Head of ICY at SK Telecom, remarked, “By combining the strengths of both companies, we aim to achieve significant progress in next-generation communication technologies, including 6G and AI infrastructure.”
