LG Electronics and Upstage Forge Partnership for On-Device AI Technology

LG Electronics has partnered with South Korean AI firm Upstage to develop on-device AI technology for its devices. This partnership aims to integrate on-device AI language models into LG’s products, including its renowned LG Gram laptop brand, allowing them to perform AI functions internally without relying on external network connections.

The on-device AI technology, based on Upstage’s small language model (SLM) technology, offers several advantages, such as faster processing speed, lower power consumption, and enhanced data security. By processing data locally within the device, LG aims to provide users with improved performance and privacy while enabling AI-powered functionalities even in offline environments.

On-device AI technology is instrumental for its ability to perform AI functions within devices without requiring an internet connection and offers advantages such as enhanced speed and reduced power consumption compared to cloud-based alternatives.

This technology ensures data security by processing information locally, making it particularly valuable in environments with unstable or disconnected internet connections, enabling AI services to be accessible anytime and anywhere.

Upstage, known for its small language model (SLM) technology, has partnered with LG Electronics to develop an on-device AI language model for integration into LG Gram laptops. This collaboration aims to extend on-device AI capabilities to a wide range of LG Electronics’ products, including home appliances, aiming to deliver top-tier AI functionalities to LG customers globally.

The rising prominence of on-device AI is evident as major tech players like Samsung Electronics and Apple integrate this technology into their latest smartphone models. LG Electronics, in collaboration with Upstage, aims to leverage on-device AI to enhance user experiences on the LG Gram laptops, offering personalized and customized AI services that cater to individual user preferences and needs. These services include voice recognition, content recommendation, and summarization, all based on data stored locally on the device.

Solar’s specialized design, which has faster inference speeds and lower power consumption than larger language models like GPT-3, makes it an ideal solution for on-device AI applications. It aims to ensure optimal performance and user satisfaction across various devices and services. Through this partnership with LG Electronics, Upstage seeks to deliver faster, more convenient, and safer AI services to users worldwide, enriching their daily lives and driving innovation in the next generation of AI-enabled devices.

Upstage’s Solar model has been lauded as an ideal solution for on-device AI, delivering various AI functionalities without compromising device performance or power consumption. With Solar achieving the top position in Hugging Face’s global large language model ranking with a score of 74.2 points, the partnership between Upstage and LG Electronics is headed towards integrating AI technology into everyday devices.

Henry Kong, head of LG’s IT customer experience division, expressed the company’s plans to target the next-generation AI notebook market, leveraging advanced technology to enhance the user experience. Upstage Vice President Choi Hong-joon echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential for faster, more convenient, and safer AI services through the collaborative development and implementation of on-device AI technology with LG Electronics. Through this partnership, Upstage and LG aim to expand AI functionalities beyond PCs to encompass a range of home appliances, offering users novel experiences and greater convenience in their daily lives.
