Samsung introduces 5 nm chip for its wearables for the first time

Samsung Electronics Co. has unveiled a new processor for its wearables on Tuesday. The new Samsung Exynos W920 processor is the industry’s first wearable processor based on an advanced 5-nanometer (nm) extreme ultra-violet (EUV) process node and has an LTE modem integrated into it.

It is expected to be used in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch with a new unified wearable platform the company built with Google.

Improved CPU and GPU 

The new processor comes with two Arn Cortex-A55 cores for power-efficient high performance and an Arm Mali-G68 for improved CPU and graphics performance. The new chip improves CPU performance by around 20% and offers ten times better graphic performance than its predecessor.

It comes with support for faster application launches, a 3D graphical user interface and a qHD screen.

More power in compact design while being power-efficient

The Exynos W920 also comes with fan-out panel-level packaging (FO-PLP) that allows manufacturers to house large batteries while maintaining a sleeker design. The system-in-package embedded package on package configuration incorporates the Exynos W920, power management integrated circuit, LPDDR4, and embedded multimedia car in the same package.

It will also come with an always-on-display functionality that will activate a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, for reduced display power consumption and support a global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 to better track speed, distance, and elevation during outdoor activities.

Talking about the Exynos W920, Harry Cho, Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics, said, “ Wearables like smartwatches are no longer just a cool gadget to have. They are now a growing part of our lifestyles to keep you fit, safe and alert. With the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually appealing user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE.”
