Samsung joins hands with Marvell to develop a new System-on-a-Chip with an improved capacity and coverage, significantly improving 5G network operations.

Samsung Electronics and Marvell Technology Group revealed that they had developed a new SoC (System-on-a-Chip) that improves 5G network functioning. According to Samsung, it will apply the new advanced SoC technology to its Massive MIMO solutions and other radio technologies. Samsung Electronics added that it would introduce the SoC to Tier 1 mobile network carriers during this year’s second half.

SoC Tech’s Improved Functions and Future Applications

Moreover, Samsung specially designed the SoC to support the latest cellular radio technologies. Specifically, the South Korean tech company optimized the SoC’s capacity and scope while minimizing its power consumption and size. The newly developed SoC could also support 4G and 5G connections at once. In addition to this, the latest SoC could conserve circuit power consumption by 70%, significantly higher than previous models’ capacities.

“Samsung prioritizes the development of high-impact 5G solutions that offer a competitive edge to our operators,” said Lee June-Hee, VP of Samsung Electronics’ R&D Networks Business. “We look forward to introducing this latest solution to the market shortly.” Lee also stated that the extended Samsung-Marvell partnership aims to fuse both firms’ capabilities and innovations for future 5G developments.

Marvell Partnership

Previously, Samsung and Marvell had partnered to develop market-leading 5G infrastructure solutions, specifically innovative Radio Access Network (RAN) unit architectures. Under their partnership, they could enhance and deliver multiple-generation network technologies using their combined intellectual properties and platforms.

According to Raj Singh, VP of Marvell’s Processors Business Group, the company is honored to collaborate with Samsung Electronics again. Singh also added that the two companies would continue working on next-generation Massive MIMO solutions, aiming to improve capacity, power supply efficiency, and overall performance. Additionally, Futurum Research’s Daniel Newman noted that Samsung and Marvell are paving the way for efficient and speedy 5G-tech deployment.

Samsung’s 5G-Related Innovations

The Korean electronics company’s most recent development widens the possible SoC technology applications. Aside from widening SoC technology utilization, Samsung’s solutions also give mobile operators, and other companies improved 5G network operations. Besides the new SoC, Samsung has delivered numerous 5G-related solutions through extensive research, such as processors and radios. Earlier, Samsung Electronics supplied its advanced 5G technologies to Japan’s largest mobile service provider, DoCoMo. Through this collaboration, Samsung reinforces its foothold as a leading global 5G innovator.
