Electronic components manufacturer Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that it had developed the world’s smallest power inductor, aiming to take advantage of the increasing market demand.

According to Samsung, the new power inductor measures 0.8 mm in width and 0.4mm in length, and 0.65 mm in thickness, a 50 percent reduction in size compared to the previously smallest power inductor.

The power inductor aids the battery from the semiconductor to provide a steady supply of electrical power. The company also improved the electrical efficiency of the new product.

Kang Heon-hur, Central Research Institute head, said that the devices’ internal components’ size must decrease as the performance increases. Electronic products frequently change and diversify their functions, which results in enhanced and smaller components. The company aims to deliver this outcome with an advance and unique technology.

Size Must Decrease as the Performance Increases

The internal storage space for the latest tech devices reduced in size as the devices became lighter and smaller. Tiny power inductors became necessary to fit more components and multi-cameras along with 5G services. These components with higher specifications need more electricity, which entails power inductors that can endure high currents.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics utilized its semiconductor substrate manufacturing methods for multilayer ceramic capacitors to reduce the size of power inductors. The company also produced the power inductors in substrate units instead of single units to increase productivity.

The company produced the power inductors by utilizing nano-grade and ultramicroscopic powders for its raw materials. Samsung Electro-Mechanics also applied a dimming technology to ensure that coils wrap tightly within a limited space. The dimming technology marks circuits with light when manufacturing semiconductors that would enable coils without any space in-between.

According to the company, an increase in demand for micro-sized power inductors becomes apparent for smaller and high-performance electronic devices. Samsung Electro-Mechanics aims to expand its product lineups to improve its market share through advanced engineering methods and materials development. The company also plans to supply the product to a global smartphone manufacturer.
