Samsung Display unveils new low-power OLED tech for its foldable phones

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics has unveiled its new power-saving OLED display, branded as Eco2 OLED. According to Samsung Display, it not only reduces power consumption but also comes in an eco-friendly design. This new display tech has found its way into its latest foldable device, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The new displays also offer an improved Under-Panel Camera (UPC) and will cut power consumption by up to 25 percent, as per the company.

At a time when power-hungry 5G phones have started dominating the market, this new technology might become the thing that our phones needed as well. So if the Eco2 OLED technology works as well as Samsung Display claims, it is something with immense potential.

A brighter screen that drains less power

Samsung Display has focused on changing the basic structure of polarizers to come up with this new technology. Eco2 OLED has integrated a kind of polarizer that eliminates the need for an additional polarizer layer, which is usually there to prevent the panel from reflecting external light, increasing contrast and improving visibility. Eco2 OLED cuts down the reflection by changing its pixel structure.

This new OLED will allow a phone to have a brighter screen that will drain less battery.

“Since a traditional polarizer adds a dark layer of film on top of the panel, your device requires more light – and power – to effectively display, with the transmittance rate reduced by over 50 percent,” the company said.

Samsung Display said that it has improved the transmittance rate by 33% while reducing power consumption by 25%.

The Eco2 OLED has also cut down on plastic to make it more eco-friendly.

An improved Under-Panel Camera

So for a while, smartphone manufacturers have tried to make the smartphone fronts as minimal as possible by trimming out the bezels and put as little area as possible around the front camera, sometimes with notches, punch hole cameras and even retractable cameras that hide inside the phone. None of them were the likely answers to the perfect full-screen display, and the next possible step was Under Display Cameras.

In an under-display camera setup, the front-facing cameras are housed underneath the display panel to achieve a real full-screen experience without distractions. Samsung has put the UPC for the first time in its Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Samsung says that the Eco2 OLED allows for an upgraded UPC for a seamless full-screen experience.

As Samsung’s position as the global leader in the smartphone market is under threat by Xiaomi, the Eco2 OLED technology can be an essential push for Samsung.
